Chapter A · 3 hotels

Art Hotels

Three hotels where painted rooms, collected furniture or a gallery-like interior shape the stay.

Entry 1: Hotel V Nesplein

Amsterdam, Netherlands

Nes is one of the oldest streets in Amsterdam, and for a long time it has been a street of theatres. Hotel V Nesplein stands on its small square, a short walk from Dam Square, in a building that once held offices.

The conversion kept things bright. Rooms pair wooden floors and walls with vintage design furniture, so no two feel quite alike. Downstairs, the lobby works as restaurant, bar and reading room at once, and a terrace looks onto the square.

Think of it as design-led rather than a gallery. Here the art is in the furnishing, and in a neighbourhood where the theatres are next door.

Entry 2: Park Hotel Tokyo

Tokyo, Japan

Start high up. Park Hotel Tokyo occupies the upper floors of the Shiodome Media Tower, and its lobby opens onto a tall atrium well above street level.

The Artist Rooms are the reason to choose it. Dozens of guest rooms have been painted directly onto the walls by Japanese artists, each working to a theme drawn from Japanese aesthetics. Book one and you sleep inside a single work.

Art continues through the public spaces, with pieces hung along the lobby and corridors. Standard rooms are calmer, and on a clear day the city view can reach Tokyo Tower.

Entry 3: Artist Residence London

London, United Kingdom

Pimlico is mostly white stucco and quiet squares. From the street, Artist Residence London fits right in: a period building on Cambridge Street with a small number of rooms above a café and bar.

Inside, the tone shifts. Walls carry prints and paintings, much of the furniture is reclaimed or reworked, and each room is dressed differently. It feels collected rather than curated.

The hotel belongs to a small group that began in Brighton, with artwork as its thread from the start. Expect an intimate hotel with a strong point of view, not a gallery with beds.
