Ice Hotels

A single entry: the hotel in northern Sweden that is carved again from ice each winter.

Entry 1: Icehotel

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Every winter, Icehotel is built again. Blocks of natural ice and packed snow are shaped into halls, rooms and suites, and by spring that building has melted away.

Artists apply each year to design the art suites, so the rooms never repeat. A permanent building, Icehotel 365, keeps a set of ice suites frozen all year, cooled with the help of solar power.

Most guests spend one night in the cold and the rest in heated rooms on site. Jukkasjärvi is a short drive from Kiruna, north of the Arctic Circle, where winter nights are long enough for the northern lights.
