Capsule Hotels

Three capsule hotels in Sapporo, Tokyo and Fukuoka, from bathing-floor capsules to a plain station-side stop.

Entry 1: Spa Safro

Sapporo, Japan

Susukino is Sapporo's late-night district, and Spa Safro is built for it. The capsules come with a full bathing floor attached.

That bathing floor is the point. Hot-spring water fills the indoor and open-air baths, with saunas and a steam room alongside. Plenty of visitors come for the baths alone; the capsule is what lets them stay the night.

Sleeping areas are separated for men and women, and each capsule has its own light and screen. Sapporo winters are long. A hot bath one lift ride from the bed counts for a lot.

Entry 2: Spa & Capsule Hotel Grandpark-Inn Kitasenju

Tokyo, Japan

Kitasenju is a rail junction in northern Tokyo where several lines meet. This capsule hotel is a few minutes on foot from the station.

Each capsule has a reading light and a small screen of its own. Beyond them, the building holds a sauna, a communal bath, a café and a library corner, so an evening here does not have to mean lying down at eight.

Some facilities have been reserved for male guests. If you are planning a stay, check the current arrangements for women's capsules and bathing first.

Entry 3: Capsule Inn Hakata

Fukuoka, Japan

Gion-machi lies between Hakata Station and the older temple streets of the city. Capsule Inn Hakata is here, within walking distance of Kushida Shrine and an easy walk from the trains.

It is a straightforward capsule hotel. Expect stacked capsules, lockers, a lounge and a large bath to soak in before bed.

Fukuoka is a food city, known for its evening yatai stalls. For a short visit built around eating, a capsule close to the station makes plain sense.
